How to succeed at work

Today we watched a webinar with Jomar Hilario and Marco LocaƱos entitled "3 Winning Tactics You Can Use to Get $25/Hr/Client".

1. Affirm yourself daily. When you wake up, believe that you will do great things today. When you meet people, smile and say "I love you" to them in silence.

2. Write down your goals. Everyday, write by hand your goals. Write in the morning about your aspirations. At night, write what you are grateful for and what you plan to do the next day.

3. Continue learning. Never stop improving. Ask questions from people. Strive to learn more and be better.

How to plan after we fail

We hear the saying: "Failing to plan is planning to fail." But even if we plan beforehand, we still fail. So don't just plan for success, anticipate failure and include it in your plan. Plan what works for you using your DISC profile.

If you are a decisive person (D), take charge of your plan and lead others to your goals. You are more likely to be the boss so it's easier for you to delegate and tell people to just do it.  Your motto is ready, fire, and aim.

If you are a influential type (I), you can easily inspire others to your vision and sell them your ideas. Focus on what you do best, such as talking to people, and outsource tasks that you do not enjoy. You are great at selling ideas, coaching people, and building relationships.

For steady or stabilizing people (S), you avoid conflict and do things placidly. You think long-term and focus on peace. Do more things that give you stability, like reading.  Assign other tasks to other profiles, and do not compare yourself. You probably like the Desiderata.

For cautious or conscientious types (C), you take good care of everything and read every word in any agreement just to be sure. Not everyone can think rationally like you, so make use of that skill. You tend to plan well first before you take action.

I have the S profile, so I tend to seek stability and avoid conflict. In work, I do assignments when I hear about them, but if I forget, I just do them as soon as possible. I rarely get mad so it is hard for me to change others or myself using passion. So I just do a little bit everyday until I improve.

How about you? How do you use your DISC Profile in planning your work and life?

How to deactivate Facebook

Today I deactivated my Facebook profile because I want to take a break from social media. I rarely hang out on Instagram and Twitter because I have no witty words to tweet or cool photos to post. But I still browse Facebook to be updated about what is happening in the world. In short, I get my news from Facebook.

Just go to the Privacy Settings on the upper right corner of the Facebook screen or click the gear symbol. Choose the Settings tab, and click on Deactivate at the last option on the main menu. Facebook will ask you why you want to deactivate. If you click on any option, they will ask you if you are sure. Just click that you are, and simply deactivate Facebook.

If you want to log in, just type in your email address and password, and you're good to go. Deactivating is not terminating your account, so you can log in and everything will be as it was before you deactivated. Good luck!

How to build good habits after you fail

I started this year with many good resolutions. Wake up early. Pray. Exercise. Read the Bible. Write a blog. Organize. Write a journal. Keep track of time. Sleep by midnight. Over the next few months, I failed to do many of the habits that I resolved to do daily. I overslept. I skipped writing a blog post or a journal entry. I did not organize. I forgot to log my time. I slept after midnight.

How do we build good habits after we fail many times?

1. Understand why you fail to do your resolutions. I always write "wake up early" and "sleep before midnight" as my resolutions, but I seldom do them. Upon reflection, I just write them down because everyone has to wake up early because of the heavy traffic in Metro Manila. Because I live near the office, I don't have to wake up early everyday, unless I have a hearing. I can just focus on getting enough sleep. So I will remove those two resolutions from my list.

2. Remind yourself of your habits. If you forget to do your resolutions, make a reminder that you can easily see or hear. For example, if you want to exercise in the morning, put the weights or running shoes near your bed. Make an alarm that will ring at the time that you want to do your habit. That's what I used to do, and it worked for me.

3. Do the important resolutions first. In the morning, I exercise first before I do the other resolutions. Why? Because I can read or write at other times, but exercising when I'm tired or full is hard. So the best time to exercise is after I wake up, when I'm well rested and neither tired nor full. In the evening, the most important thing is to publish a blog post because I want to build discipline and write daily. After I eat dinner and read on the internet, I write a blog post. I try to blog everyday. Kindly let me know what you need or want to read, so I can write blog posts that can help you.

4. Make your habits easy to do. According to Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg, we should make our habits very simple and easy to do, something like 30 seconds or less. I did 3 Tiny Habits for a few weeks, and it is really easy to do. After you make a habit that you always do, try doing a small part of the habit that you wish to develop. For example, after you brush your teeth, you just floss one tooth. Maybe after you wake up, you take a sip of water.

I also simplified my existing habits. For example, I shortened my exercise routine from two sets with twelve to ten repetitions each to just one set of twelve repetitions each. On my blog, I am happy when I can write coherently and simply. For my journal, I write using verbs and bullets. When my habits become automatic, I can later increase their difficulty and complexity.

5. Monitor your habits. After reading Better than Before and The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin and 168 Hours by Laura Vanderkam, I resolved to keep a resolution chart and a time log this month to help me keep track of my habits. I remembered to chart and log over the weekend, but I did not do them during the weekdays. So I will do the chart and log tonight before I sleep. Over time, our habits become automatic when we do them everyday.

How to hack your success

In today's webinar, we learned how to think long term and to use our imagination.

For the long term exercise, we studied charts showing the prices of gold, silver, oil, and US dollar. We saw that gold and silver have nine year cycles. If we know the trend, we can buy low and sell high.

For the next part, we studied newspapers and revised the headlines to make the stories our own. If we can imagine reaching our dreams and we actually work hard for our goals, we can do them higher, faster, and stronger.

How to receive the Divine Mercy

Card of the Divine Mercy
Today is the second Sunday of the Easter season, and it is also the Feast of the Divine Mercy. When Jesus was crucified and died on the cross, a soldier pierced his side with a lance, and out flowed his blood and water. This blood and water symbolizes the mercy of God for us, hence the Divine Mercy.
In the Philippines, some television stations show the 3 o'clock prayer for the Divine Mercy.  When we remember that it is 3 in the afternoone, we stop what we are doing and remember the passion, death and resurrectionof Christ. When we are grateful for the mercy of God, we tend to act and live in ways that are also loving and merciful to others and to ourselves.
1. Seek the Divine Mercy. We can pray the chaplet of Mercy or other prayers of the Divine Mercy. The chaplet are short prayers that are repeated just like in a rosary. When we sincerely seek God's forgiveness for our sins, God will forgive and bless us.
2. Be merciful to others. People who are forgiven tend to forgive more and love more. Does that mean that we should sin first to be loving? No, but it means treating people with justice and mercy. When a person does something out of mistake, not spite or neglect, we can choose to forgive them. Pera lang iyan.

3. Be merciful to yourself. While being merciful to others, let us also be be merciful to yourselves. Learn from your mistakes, and resolve to do better. Never give up, never surrender the faith.
The priest in the homily today had three points: new life, new courage, and new faith. Saint Peter had a new life when Jesus ascended, and he was no longer afraid of proclaiming the gospel and healing the sick in Jesus' name. For new life, the Word of God sustained Saint John even though his fellow disciples were already martyred or living abroad. For new faith, Saint Peter denied Jesus three times, but we can always send our art projects for him  space.

How to write copy like J. Peterman

Today, I’m writing an ad for the Asus ZenFone Selfie using the copywriting style of J. Peterman.

The strategy of J. Peterman is simple. First, take any ordinary thing. Next, write about it in a way that would trigger the emotions and memories of the reader. Then sell it for a higher price.

Peterman writes for a high-end audience, so we also write copy for rich customers. Besides, it’s easier to go from high-end to low-end than to go up.

In our copywriting exercise, Mr. Jomar Hilario said that we should write about four things:

  1. Item

  2. Favorite memory

  3. Famous personalities

  4. Emotions of the rich

First, the item is the Asus ZenFone Selfie.

Second, for the favorite memory, I had to ask myself: “Why would a rich person buy an Asus ZenFone Selfie when he can buy an iPhone?” Here are three answers from a rich person’s point of view:

  1. Your high school barkada is going on a road trip in the Philippines, and you bought the ZenFone Selfie so that you can have one phone to store all your selfies.

  2. You backpack around the world, and you want to keep your iPhone safe while you take death-defying poses of the Grand Canyon, Macchu Picchu, Matterhorn, Banaue Rice Terraces, etc.

  3. Your favorite aunt asked you what you want for your birthday because she noticed that you like taking selfies.

Third, famous personalities for rich people would be Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and Scarlett Johannson, among others in Hollywood. For Philippine cinema, Piolo Pascual, Bea Alonzo, John Lloyd Cruz, Anne Curtis, Alden Richards, and Maine Mendoza are popular.

Fourth, write down the emotions of the rich without the product and with the product. Without the product, they have to find ways to take selfies while keeping their smartphones safe. If they pass by an area where security is lacking, they have to make sure that their smartphones are not stolen. Their dominant emotion would be fear.

With the ZenFone Selfie, they have another smartphone that they can solely use for their photos and selfies. They can keep their primary smartphones in their bags, and just use the ZenFone Selfie to take pictures. If they have to take a photo from a high place, they can whip up the ZenFone in no time beause it’s made for selfies and they don’t have to worry about losing it. Rich people would have peace of mind.

Now, let’s find an ad to copy. I searched the J. Peterman website, and the item that is the most related to the ZenFone Selfie that I can find is the Air Force Watch. So I will pattern my copy to that ad.

Paano maalala ang UP naming mahal
